MENG – 1/35 King Tiger

December 2021

Back in the day, I always went for 1/72 scale, be it planes or ground vehicles. With this kit, I wanted to try out how it feels to build a big, steel cat of the German Army.
Needless to say, it felt great and instantly made me long for more.

The camouflage I went with is something I came up myself, with a what-if scenario of an Easter front. Not much of a looker, but I really wanted to deviate from the usual “let’s build another historically accurate tank based off of 3 blurry photos”, where even the smallest detail is replicated..
I mean… sure… if that’s your thing, I applaud your dedication and resilience to go through with it. It’s an open hobby, do what you do best.
For me… I wanted to be independent from camo schemes and whatnot.

The kit is straight forward and has great fit overall, with some minor issues here and there…
Like the massive ejection pin nubs…
Or the brittle plastic that can easily crack…
Or the missing gun breach…

But overall it was a pleasure to put it together.

Except for the tracks.
Looks like in 1/35 scale it’s hard to make tracks which run around the wheels without any problems, where you don’t have to try and force it to reach around properly.
So I got metal tracks from Masterclub, which were excellent (link).

One thing though…
I know that in current days all the cool kids make their own zimmerit coating, but I come from a time when you bought a kit depicting a zimmerit coated tank, you received a zimmerit coated tank in the box and you didn’t had to run off and buy a separate set of zimmerit film.
What the hell MENG?
