Mid 2021
The Me 262 was always one of those planes which I found very interesting (probably not alone with this).
Not just because it being the first operational jet fighter, but rather its looks.
The swept wings. The two jet engines. The canopy form. The slick nose with 4 machine guns mounted in it…
It’s like something that would come through a time portal and not something the Germans could design and build whilst everything is being bombed to hell and back around them.
Anyhow…
Back in my younger years I did have a kit from Matchbox and I loved it.
Wasn’t too crazy, with zero cockpit detail, with any detail for that matter.
So it was a nice retro feel when I started to build this Airfix one.
The detail I was presented from the beginning wasn’t something I was expecting from Airfix to be honest, so I was pleasantly surprised.
The cockpit is nice, the panel lines are crisp and the amount of decals is staggering.
It went together relatively well, but there were big issues the the engines fitting to the wing. This meant a lot of sanding, trimming and dry fitting.
Rest of the plane was good and as usual, Arifix provides gears up position. Well done!
The second problem was the blue-white checkers pattern on the fuselage. The decals just wouldn’t fit as expected and in the end I resorted to mask and airbrush it on. Which, to be fair, produced a much better end result.
Overall a nice kit, but be prepared for some work with the engine fittings.
I am certainly going to redo this bird in the future, but going to try it out from a different manufacturer next time.
