Tamiya – 1/72 P-51D

October 2022

I had a bit of bad start with this one. Did build this once, more than a year ago.
After a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears…
The final touch. The final varnish. To seal the deal…
Pealed off like skin taking some paint and decals with it.

My pain and disappointment was immeasurable. All that work for nothing in the end.
So I took the “easy” way out. Binned the thing and promised myself that I am going to build it again, as there is no aircraft collection without one P-51 in them.
It is as iconic as the Spitfire, the Bf-109, the IL-2 and the Zero. It just had to be done.

Good thing I did, because I already knew what to expect, so it was a familiar territory and I came prepared with better varnishes (Mission Models), nicer metallic paints
(AK Extreme Metals) and with the patience of a Saint and determination of a Possessed.

This is a fantastic little kit with the usual Tamiya quality. I can only fault two (maybe three) things with this.
One. The lack of closed running gears. Tamiya doesn’t seem to believe in flying planes in 1/72 scale (or at least they haven’t done so 20+ years ago).
Two. You can lose a lot of really small and fine detail on the bottom intake where the two fuselage halves meet.
Three. The crazy thick decals they make. It’s just too thick and Microsol resistant.
